Description:
OVERVIEW
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Environmental Engineer or Scientist to join our BC team. Depending on the successful candidate’s location, this position may be situated in Vancouver, Victoria, Abbotsford, Kamloops, or Squamish.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment, and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine, and environmental services.
As an Intermediate Environmental Engineer or Scientist, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a post-secondary program in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Hydrogeology, or Civil / Geological Engineering with an environmental focus.
- Minimum 5-10 years of experience.
- Registered as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Ag., or P.Chem.
- Strong understanding of Contaminated Sites Regulation (CSR) and federal environmental guidelines.
- Knowledge of project management as it relates to environmental investigations and remediation.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English language is required.
- Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites.
- Strong technical aptitude and technical writing ability.
- Ability to manage people while overseeing projects.
- Ability to work well and self-motivate in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to mentor and supervise junior staff.
- Strong organizational and communication skills (able to communicate solutions in writing, verbally, and graphically.
- Ability to prioritize work and make responsible decisions that can be defended.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers license.
- Comfortable driving in urban, rural, and construction environments.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
- Demonstrated experience delivering technical site investigations and remediations solutions.
- Experience with hydrogeological assessments.
- Experience with erosion and sediment control.
Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed scopes of work and cost estimates to execute Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) and contaminated site investigations (i.e., Phase II ESAs) in soil, groundwater, surface water, and soil vapour;
- Work with other technical professionals and subcontractors to develop remedial options analysis and risk assessment/management strategies;
- Develop detailed scopes of work and cost estimates to execute chosen remedial strategies and coordinate with subcontractors;
- Project Management including monitoring project scope of work progression, project spending, and project schedule;
- If required, conduct and/or lead fieldwork on complex projects and mentor field staff on field execution;
- Liaise with field staff and technical discipline leaders during project execution;
- Analyze and interpret project data and prepare technical reports that meet regulatory requirements;
- Maintain positive client relationships and communicate project status on a routine basis;
- Participate in marketing and business development activities and initiatives, contribute to cost estimates of projects in collaboration with all other disciplines; and,
- Contribute to proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with existing and prospective clients.
