Description:
SUMMARY
The Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit (CFEU) at the Vale Living With Lakes Centre (LWLC) is seeking to hire an Intern in Conservation and Biodiversity Restoration of Aquatic Systems. The successful candidate must reside in northern Ontario, this must be their first job in this field, and they must not have previously participated in NOHFC’s People & Talent Program. This opportunity is proudly supported by Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and is funded through the Workforce Development Program. The Intern will have office space in the Vale LWLC at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario and will report to the CFEU Director (Dr. Jackie Litzgus) and LWLC Business Manager (Karen Oman). This is an in person position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- An undergraduate degree in Biology or Environmental Science, with independent research experience. A graduate degree is considered an asset;
- Experience with software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with statistical software (eg, R) is considered an asset;
- Be self-motivated with the ability to work collaboratively and independently;
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;and
- Ability to work fluently, verbally and in writing, in English.
Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Field sampling across a variety of boreal shield ecosystems;
- Laboratory processing and analyses of water, sediments, and aquatic organisms;
- Data management, archiving, quality control and analyses;
- Ensuring protocols for operating multidisciplinary lab and field compounds:
- lab and field health and safety;
- supplies and chemical inventory including MSDS and other labelling;
- management, maintenance and use of multi-user equipment;
- animal care and research permits, and reporting;
- field supply and lab consumable inventory and purchasing protocols;
- Relationship-building with First Nations;
- Science communication and project management skills; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
