Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has supported more than 60 Member States in preventing and responding to violence against children and empowering children to become agents in their own protection since the launch of its Global Programme to End Violence against Children in 2015. Under the Global Programme to End Violence against Children, UNODC is implementing a project titled “STRIVE Juvenile: Preventing and Responding to Violence against Children by Terrorist and Violent Extremist Groups”, focusing on focus on assisting governmental authorities and key stakeholders in targeted, innovative and demand-driven interventions to 1. Improve government strategies, policies and mechanisms related to child recruitment and exploitation by terrorist groups; and 2. Increase resilience of vulnerable children against terrorist groups agendas. For more information, please visit www.unodc.org/unodc/en/justice-and-prison-reform/endvac/index.html Under the overall guidance of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer heading the Global Programme to End Violence against Children, and the direct supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer coordinating STRIVE Juvenile activities in Iraq, the intern will gain first-hand knowledge and expertise in UNODC activities relating to crime prevention and criminal justice in general, and justice for children in particular, and will contribute to the implementation of the project titled “STRIVE Juvenile: Preventing and Responding to Violence against Children by Terrorist and Violent Extremist Groups” in Iraq. Important to note: - The duration of the internship is 6 months - The internship is unpaid and full-time. - The intern will work five days per week (Sunday to Thursday) (40 hours a week) - The internship is home-based (remote). Responsabilities: - Carry out basic research on justice for children related fields; - Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs in English & Arabic, e.g. correspondence, draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications and guidance documents, speeches, webstories, progress reports, activity reports etc.; - Contribute to the elaboration of concept notes, background documents and summaries relevant to the project. - Support in the preparation of training material for technical assistance activities such as capacity-building workshops - Assist in preparing briefing notes, statements, presentations and communications. - Support the review and translation of relevant documents and training material in English and Arabic. - Attend and take notes at meetings, as required. - Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English & Arabic is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
