Duties and Responsibilities
The post is located at the Office of the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Section and under the daily guidance of the Professional Officers in the Section, the incumbent will perform the following tasks: • Researches, drafts and updates country profiles and other background notes in preparation for the presentation of credentials to the Director-General or other meetings with high-level dignitaries; • Monitors and carries out research on topical issues in international affairs and prepares background papers and analysis for the Section; • Monitors and carries out research on developments within the United Nations funds, programmes and specialized agencies and other international organizations, in particular the Geneva-based entities, and prepares background notes for the attention of the Chief of Section; upon request, attends meetings of United Nations entities; prepares summaries and analysis of the discussions; • Monitors and carries out research on NGOs, Private companies, Swiss-based academic and research institutions, think tanks and foundations and prepares background notes for the attention of the Chief of Section / Unit. Upon request, attends meetings with IOs, NGOs, and other partners and prepares summaries; • Participates in the planning and organization of seminars, workshops and other events with external partners, including, inter alia, undertaking background research; identifying speakers and invitees; preparing invitations; liaising with speakers; responding to queries and providing relevant information to invitees; and assisting in the general administration of the individual event; • Follow NGO participation at the UN meetings in Geneva, in particular, the sessions of the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms; • Attends public meetings with NGO participation and meetings which are of strategic interest for the NGO Liaison Unit and drafts the reporting minutes; • Supports the Unit in developing a communication tool and outreach strategy as well as produce guidelines and materials to facilitate the engagement of civil society actors with the UN; • As requested, drafts and prepares routine correspondence for the Section; • Assists in the administration of the institutional memory of the Section, including updating databases of country profiles and other material, as necessary; • Carries out any other ad hoc tasks, as may be required by the Chief of Section and /or the Professional Officers in the Section.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
For this post fluency in English and/or French is required. Knowledge of the other language is strongly recommended.
Additional Information
The internship is for a duration of between three and six months maximum. The internship is designed to be full-time and in a hybrid mode. The modality can be handled flexibly on request of the successful candidate.
