Description:

Key Duties

  • Ensure the provision of mental health mentoring is delivered to the institution via the creation, preparation and implementation of individual support programmes for students with mental health difficulties, which enable participation in study and management of mental health difficulties.
  • Use professional judgement and creativity to work collaboratively with students to identify their needs, drawing on specialist information reported in medical evidence and disability needs assessment reports.
  • To communicate the complex, specialist and technical information in the assessment reports and other medical evidence, to the student, ensuring they gain insight into their diagnosis and its potential effect on their learning and participation in studies.
  • Identify and manage issues of risk, and take the necessary actions to ensure the safety of the student, staff and others, adhering to university policy and procedures.
  • To assess students’ progress in developing and applying strategies, provide appropriate feedback and review support programmes in response.
  • To set appropriate boundaries with students, referring to wider Student Support Services when required.
  • To liaise with the Mental Health Advisers and support staff, ensuring adherence to professional bodies code of conduct and the required accredited standards and internal policies and procedures.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the delivery of mentoring support where they fall within set role objectives.
  • To actively participate in internal and external networks and CPD opportunities to maintain professional qualifications and continuous development in the area of mental health support.
  • To actively contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the mentoring service, working with the Mental Health Advisers to investigate and analysis specific issues, creating recommendation reports.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University within the field of mental health support and contribute to the development of the disability and dyslexia team.
  • Develop and deliver training on mental health awareness to staff.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department.

  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
