Ko wai mātou | Who are we
Ngāti Whātua are an indigenous people of New Zealand and are hapū of the wider Ngāti Whātua iwi located in and around Tamaki isthmus. Ngāti Whātua history in Tāmaki Makaurau extends back to the migration from Hawaiiki. The people of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are a hapū (sub-tribe), of the Ngāti Whātua iwi (tribe) with more than 5000 tribal members and the ahikāroa home-fires are centred around Orakei Marae.
Proudly owned and operated by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei - Ōrakei Health has been operating for over 50 years, since it’s inception in 1970. The genesis of the clinic came from Ngāti Whātua Kuia and Kaumātua with the moemoea (vision) to manaaki (support) and awhi (embrace) both, Whānau and the wider community in their health and well-being journey, creating the first clinic - Whare Ora (House of Well-being) later named Tumanako (Hope) House.
Now Ōrakei Health continue their legacy and commitment to health and well-being, extending in to Primary Care and Community Development guided by Kaupapa Māori values and hold true to; Whakapapa , Whānaungatanga , Whāngai Pukenga , Haerenga te Hauora.
Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The Opportunity
The Primary Care Health Assistant works under the direction and delegation of a Registered Nurse or General Practitioner to provide primary care nursing support, patient interventions and treatment within the Ōrakei Health. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following practice policies and procedures. As part of the general practice team they will be responsible for providing patient-centred, culturally appropriate, and individual holistic care to patients.
Patients should feel that they have been dealt with in a friendly, courteous manner and that all that can be done for them, has been done. “Going the extra mile” is our philosophy.
Partnerships & collaboration with other teams within the Toitoi Manawa Tāmaki Hub is required to provide efficient, effective, holistic wrap around services to ensure overall wellbeing of patients/whanau.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with routine examinations, diagnostic tests, and patient care.
- Prepare and maintain clinical environments and equipment.
- Observe and report changes in patient health to the Registered Nurse or health team.
- Apply appropriate infection control procedures and cold chain principles.
- Have, or working towards a minimum Certificate in Health and Wellbeing
- Have a current First Aid Certificate
- Assist with patient health education, screenings, and chronic care support.
- Ensure equipment is sterilized, clean, and ready for use.
- Support patient engagement through culturally appropriate services and manaakitanga.
- Maintain accurate patient records, privacy, and clinical claims processes.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, health and safety programs, and contribute to quality improvement.
