Job Description
Job Title: Inventory Assistant, Irish Antiquities Collections
Department: Registration Department, National Museum
Location: Dublin (Kildare Street, Dublin 2)
Position Reports to: Irish Antiquities Documentation Officer (NM)) / Line Manager
Contract: Fixed term from October 2024 to May 2025

PRINCIPAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Primary Degree in Irish Archaeology
Experience in processing archaeological finds from excavations or in a post-excavation environment.
A broad knowledge of Irish archaeological objects.
IT fluency, particularly in the use of databases and data inputting, preferably collections management systems.
Basic understanding of SPECTRUM, the UK-based international standard for museum collections care and management.
Good attention to detail and an appreciation of proper handling skills when working with museum collections.
Fluent English.

Responsibilities:

Complete an inventory of a large quantity of Irish Antiquities (IA) collections from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) into the NMI IA collections management databases, as part of a team.
Follow NMI guidelines to inventory and document collection objects.
Data input of Irish Antiquities collections from physical objects to database.
Complete object information as needed; this includes identifying objects, assigning unique identifiers, writing brief descriptions, updating locations records and labelling objects.
Physically handle, re-bag or re-house museum objects, as needed.
Assess and report to NMI staff any objects in need of conservation or stabilisation.
Report on and audit the inventory throughout the project as directed by the project plan (some of the audits could be taking place in Swords, Co. Dublin).
Data input of Irish Antiquities collections from accession registers to database.
Adherence to set daily and weekly productivity and quality targets.
Execute all requirements as set out by the Irish Antiquities Documentation Officer/Line Manager and Registrar.
