Description:

The post holder will have a key leadership role at senior level and will provide specialist knowledge and skills to ensure the delivery of care within The Hospice as part of The Hospice Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). Direct clinical involvement in the care delivered in The Hospice and take responsibility for the overall clinical management of the unit in collaboration with the Registered Manager and clinical leadership team. Act as a role model for all staff working within the Hospice service, demonstrating a professional and proactive approach, providing expert clinical practice and advice including the direct management of the Ward Sister and MDT members. Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct.
Act as the Lead Patient Safety Specialist for the whole of the St Helena clinical services, supporting a patient safety culture with clear systems in place to ensure senior management and executive understanding of the issues that may exist and actions needed to be taken across the hospice in relation to patient safety. Lead in developing a patient and family led service whilst maintaining and improving clinical standards within the in-patient unit. Identify where existing standards should be updated and highlight new developments in practice in all clinical areas across the organisation. Lead the nursing team to deliver care that meets the CQC fundamental standards.
Accountable for managing the control of expenditure within a defined budget and work with the Associate Director of Operations to regularly review productivity and expenditure. Be responsible for leading and overseeing the management of respite beds and coordinating the application and monitoring of Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funded placements, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and compliance with regulatory and financial guidelines. Provide professional and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the MDT with a paramount focus on patient safety and quality care. Proactively lead on all patient experience and patient safety initiatives to include the reduction of healthcare acquired infection, falls and pressure ulcers.
Monitor infection prevention and control (IPC) standards within practice via regular audit and observation of practice, working to identify and resolve any IPC related issues, seeking advice when appropriate from IPC Consultant. Directly lead and support across the hospice with patient safety, understanding, involvement and improvement activity and ensure systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles are embedded in all patient safety processes. Manage and develop the service in line with national and local requirements ensuring the delivery of performance targets, development of best practice, and modernisation agenda in conjunction with service leads and other key stakeholders. Liaise with the practice educator in conjunction with the Associate Director of Clinical Services to lead and coordinate the workforce planning and development agenda within area of responsibility to enable service provision and development.
Be an accessible and authoritative figure for staff, patients, and carers. Work as part of the clinical leadership team, providing representation at meetings where delegated and acting on behalf of in periods of absence
