ABOUT THIS JOB

Working in the IT Operations division of the IT Services department and reporting into the IT Systems Team Leader, the cloud infrastructure engineer role will support and lead the organisation with the use of Cloud infrastructure and platform services. The role will bring skills and expertise to such areas as cloud technical architecture (for a workload’s use of infrastructure as a service [IaaS] and platform as a service [PaaS] components); automating cloud management tasks, provisioning and configuration management, virtualisation; and other aspects involved in preparing and optimizing cloud solutions.
The role will lead on design and implementation activities that result in new or improved cloud-related capabilities for the organisation and be responsible for integrations of the Cloud environment into other SaaS solutions; all underpinned by the cloud infrastructure engineer’s solid understanding of networking and security in the cloud
The IT cloud infrastructure engineer collaborates closely with product/platform teams, software developers, security, and network specialists, as well as other roles, particularly those in the infrastructure and operations.
The cloud infrastructure engineer will also support colleagues with complex operational concerns in areas such as deployment activities, event management, incident and problem management, availability, capacity and service-level management, as well as service continuity. The role will also entail developing the skill set of the wider IT Systems team to improve its capability in Cloud infrastructure.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POST

  • Provide expert knowledge on IT Cloud infrastructure and platforms to support our organizations ongoing Cloud adoption journey.
  • Architect new IT Cloud solutions including analyzing requirements, identifying suitable Cloud products, prototyping, design and development of infrastructure artifacts, testing, implementation, and the preparation for ongoing support.
  • Design, build, deliver, maintain and improve infrastructure solutions. This includes automation strategies such as IaC, configuration-as-code, policy-as-code, release orchestration and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, and collaborative ways of working (e.g., DevOps). Participate in change and release management processes, carrying out complex provisioning and configuration tasks manually, where needed.
  • Research new tools and technologies to enhance cloud platform capabilities. Proactively identify innovative ways to reduce manual tasks, and teach, coach or mentor others to improve cloud outcomes using automation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for all approved IaaS, Virtualisation and PaaS services, lead on escalated incidents and requests, and develop the local teams’ knowledge in these areas.
  • Participate in mentoring. Practice continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Work closely with security specialists and technical architects to design, implement and test security controls, and ensure engineering activities align to security configuration guidance, organisation standards and best practice.
  • Establish logging, monitoring and observability solutions and procedures, including identification of requirements, design, implementation, and operationalization. Provide management reports on the environment including recommendations to improve performance, security and functions and reduce running costs.
  • Work closely with third-party suppliers when required. Engage with vendor technical support as the customer lead role when appropriate.
  • Support resilience activities — e.g., disaster recovery (DR) design and testing, performance testing and tabletop planning exercises.
  • Actively keep up to date and adopt IT industry best practice within your service area providing appropriate solutions that meet business needs.
  • Maintaining current IT knowledge of all relevant technical and sector developments in respect of your areas of responsibility and use this information in the delivery of your role with the team.
  • Participate in vendor selection, product evaluation and selection for technologies.
  • Own and ensure that IT system administration and IT status monitoring processes are maintained and followed.
  • Develop and maintain routine maintenance processes and ensure that they are followed and completed on schedule.
  • Ensure the IT technical delivery for the Council is both of the highest quality at a cost-effective price.
  • Contribution to the planning and delivery for the successful implementation of IT infrastructure projects.
  • Delivers the target-state IT technical delivery towards business objectives and goals in an efficient manner.
  • Advises on IT performance issues and any security and compliance risks.
  • Aids the various technological resources within the IT systems landscape.
  • Monitors the lifecycle of IT systems towards managing the legacy impact of systems on the Council.
  • Performing duties in accordance with the ITIL framework to ensure a consistent best practice approach to service delivery and management.
  • Proactively maintain service Availability, Performance, and Security.
  • Provides the necessary IT systems methods towards managing performance impacts and correcting suboptimal user experience.
