CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Athletic Trainer II

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited sports medicine program in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field and equivalent to two (2) years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’S) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Full to advanced knowledge of principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, organizational and administrative skills involved with coordinating athletic training specific items within an athletic training department.
  • Through knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.
  • Ability to comply with HIPAA to effectively communicate high level and sensitive medical information.
  • Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity, develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs, and manage and treat injuries.
  • Able to use the full range of therapeutic modalities, treatments and rehabilitation and prevent injuries.
  • Ability to recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
  • Ability to use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions and work in an environment with competing priorities.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health professionals.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis and other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage.
  • Ability to effectively use rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
  • Ability to follow rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in athletic training.
  • Previous experience with collegiate and/or professional athletes.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK – up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits. Required to perform work of an active nature, requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties. Requires use of well-developed hand eye coordination for precise motions and use of small instruments. Requires ambulatory ability to lift medium-to-heavy weight materials, balance, and walk and stand for extended periods of time. Requires hand and arm strength to perform massage and kneading movements. Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects and recognize physical injuries.

Responsibilities:

Diagnosis & Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries

  • Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries.
  • Develop, administer, and implement preventive and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments in accordance with the physician orders including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment and apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
  • Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
  • Regularly evaluate the physical condition and overall health and well-being of student athlete.
  • Refer student – athletes to medical specialists as needed.
  • Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
  • Advise student athletes on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition.
  • Counsel student athletes and coaches regarding rehabilitation and treatment plans.
  • Attend practices and athletics events and provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes.
  • Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.

Coordination of Treatment, Training Programs, & Prevention Programs

  • Schedule and assign student-athletes time for rehabilitation or treatment.
  • May provide access to over-the-counter medication for student athletes in accordance with physician direction, applicable university policy and legal guidelines and ensuring required documentation.
  • Act as a liaison with the Strength and Conditioning staff, coaches, and Sports Medicine.
  • Coordinate drug prevention and supplement education programs for student athletes.
  • Assist with coordination and communication with Mental Health Liaison for mental health resources and care.
  • Support the department leadership efforts in relation to mentorship of training staff through continuing education, industry best practices, certifications, and modalities.

Identify, Cultivate, Solicit, & Steward Community Partnerships with Health Care Providers

  • Maintain a list of all off-campus care providers that offer specialized medical treatment.
  • Research and identify deficiencies and needs for specialized care providers outside of the scope of Athletic Trainers.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with off-campus care providers to ensure retention and expansion of available resources.
  • Keep track of industry trends and NCAA and NATA recommendations.

Department Liaison for Dietician & Sports Performance Staff

  • Serve as primary liaison with campus registered dietician.
  • Manage and plan nutritional education and needs of student-athletes and sports programs.
  • Identify community partners for nutritional resources through gift-in-kind donations.
  • Serve as primary liaison with Sports Performance Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Identify best practices in collaborating Sports Medicine and Sports Performance efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of student-athlete population.

Prepare and Maintain Electronic Record & Reports

  • Maintain appropriate medical records of injuries treatment plans and progress.
  • Ensure record keeping is HIPAA compliant.
  • Communicate with Head AT and coaches regarding respective team’s injury reports.

Administrative Duties

  • Perform inventory tracking of medical supplies and assist with ordering as needed.
  • Assist in writing, revising, and enforcing various CSUB Sports Medicine Policies.
  • Manage master calendar for athletic competitions.
  • Maintain equipment and cleanliness of athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.
  • Assist with annual equipment calibrations for specific athletic training room equipment and machines.
  • Maintain continuing education units for current certification requirements.
