The expected ENTRY pay range for this position based on experience and equity within the Judicial Branch is $22.35 to $26.00.
This position is eligible for the $1.00 floater differential.
This position is a non-exempt position under the FLSA.

About the Position
The Judicial Assistant – Floater works directly with Superior Court Commissioners and Superior Court Judges as their administrative right hand to provide essential support in the pursuit of our dedication to providing a safe, fair, and impartial forum for resolving disputes.
Assignments are based on the needs of the Judicial Branch and assignments will be at one of our 4 Superior Court regions across the valley. We offer a $1.00 per hour differential in addition to the hourly wage for any hours worked for this floater position.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of administrative experience

OR

Combined Education And Experience Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Courtroom Assistant or Judicial Clerk Senior within the Maricopa County Superior Court may substitute for the experience requirement.
  • Completion of an accredited legal secretary or paralegal training program or certification, may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess or obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license at the time of hire.

Knowledge Of:

  • Office procedures and practices
  • Principles and processes for customer service standards and procedures.

Skill In:

  • Verbally communicating with others to convey information effectively.
  • Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • The use of computer applications and software such as MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, iCIS, and OnBase.

Ability To:

  • Learn, understand and properly apply Court policies and procedures, legal terminology and practices, and the legal requirements for processing court documents.
  • Utilize a multi-line telephone system, For the Record, and copy machines.
  • Understand and follow brief oral and written instructions in a concise and accurate manner.
  • Make sound decisions in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a court calendar
  • Work effectively with judges, commissioners, attorneys, court personnel, and the public.

Essential Job Tasks

  • Provides all administrative support to Family Court Judge or Commissioner as a Judicial Assistant and/or Courtroom Assistant.
  • Prepares, maintains, and revises daily court calendars, including, setting hearings/trial dates and processing motions.
  • Arranges for interpreters and other court services as necessary.
  • Reviews case files for completeness and contacts interested parties for missing information.
  • Prepares information for Judge’s or Commissioner’s review prior to hearings.
  • Prepares courtroom, gathers all parties for hearings, directs when cases will proceed to courtroom, and manages calendar flow.
  • Assists in case flow management with daily input of hearing outcomes into the court database.
  • Willingly provides coverage to any assigned location based on the needs of the Judicial Branch.
  • Answers questions in person and by telephone from self-represented litigants, attorneys, and court staff.
  • Reviews mail daily and processes all in-box and out-box correspondence for Judge or Commissioner.
  • Works collaboratively with other Judge or Commissioner divisions to offer support as necessary.
  • Effectively utilizes the following programs and equipment: MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, iCIS, OnBase, eFile, multi-line telephone system, For the Record and copy machine.
  • Provides administrative support for customer service as necessary.

Working Conditions:
Must be able to travel to any Superior Court location for coverage assignments as directed by Judicial Clerk Supervisor, Staff/Trainer, Family Court Administrator/designee, or Family Court Presiding Judge based on the needs of the department. These assignments will be of varied duration (i.e. one day, one week and/or several months). Some assignments may be eligible for mileage reimbursement.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak clearly and hear; see details of objects that are less than a few feet away; sit for long periods of time; stand, walk, use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally push, pull or lift up to 20 pounds.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County participates in the State Retirement systems ASRS or PSPRS. As such, mandatory membership for all full-time employees includes payroll deducted contributions consistent with each retirement system’s requirements. The current contribution rate for ASRS is 12.27% and the current contribution rate for PSPRS is 5.84% and up for the defined contribution plan and 8.82% for the defined benefit plan.
