SUMMARY

We are currently recruiting a community-minded individual to join our Corporate Services department as a Junior Accountant. The Junior Accountant will play a pivotal role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the finance department at the Calgary Food Bank.

DESCRIPTION

The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food support for families and individuals facing crisis. As the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank, we have the capacity to serve families, individuals, and organizations to fight hunger. Last year, we raised $17.3 M of funds and $36.6 M of food to support our services and programs as we work towards our vision of a hunger-free community.
We are currently recruiting a community-minded individual to join our Corporate Services department as a Junior Accountant. The Junior Accountant will play a pivotal role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the finance department at the Calgary Food Bank.

DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES:

  • Prioritize work based on the needs of the department.
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Volunteer supervision, scheduling and allocation of duties.
  • Using defined policies and processes, and good judgment – decide what can be done independently and what needs to be referred to the department manager.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 years of accounting experience required
  • Diploma or greater in Accounting (or advanced accounting degree)
  • Enrollment in the CPA program preferred but not required
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience can be considered

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of Windows-based computers and databases.
  • Skills and experience in data entry, data integrity and information management, with a focus on speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to function in a dynamic information-based environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform Bank Reconciliation.
  • Calculate prepayment and depreciation.
  • Record monthly payroll entries.
  • Reconcile and prepare GST return.
  • Manage the monthly reconciliation of revenue.
  • Monitor all contracts and agreements.
  • Handle and follow up with all insurance requirements to ensure accurate records.
  • Count cash donations received.
  • Arrange bank deposits, summary reports and other related actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of accounts receivable.
  • Possibly assigned projects that involve creating procedures and policies.
  • Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures, including participate in training when required.
  • Any other duties as required.
