POSITION SUMMARY
The Junior Accountant is responsible for supporting the various financial functions of Esquimalt Nation. This position reports directly to the Director of Finance and will support the finance department in accounts payable, accounts receivable and audit preparation, in addition to many other key functions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Demonstrated competence with basic Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
· Understanding of Federal Policies and Legislation as they impact First Nation Communities and specific areas of responsibility is an asset.
· Comprehensive working knowledge of all aspects of full cycle accounting including accounts payable, receivables, bank reconciliations and financial statements.
· Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
· College diploma or degree, preferably in business, accounting, or financial management.
· 2 + years of prior professional accounting experience is required.
· Knowledge of accounting standards is required
· Pursuant to Section 41 of BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit), with the required combination of education and experience
Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable
· Handles the full cycle of accounts payable, including processing invoices, verifying transactions, ensuring accuracy, and preparing payments.
· Maintains clear and consistent communication with vendors regarding billing inquiries, payment timelines, and any discrepancies.
· Prepares and executes payment transactions on a timely basis. Record all transactions accurately in our accounting system.
Administrative Support
· Assists with the quarterly budget preparation process, providing support in forecasting and planning.
· Works closely with the Director of Finance and/or Senior Finance and Taxation Administrator on ad-hoc analyses or financial projects as required.
· Performs administrative duties for our accounting software, Adagio, focusing on Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and General Ledger (GL) functionalities.
· Ensures all financial documents are filed appropriately and maintains organized records for easy retrieval and compliance purposes.
Banking and Reconciliations
· Monitors and records all bank and credit card transactions, ensuring all activities are captured accurately in our accounting system.
· Processes employee expense reimbursements in accordance with our internal policies, verifying all submissions for accuracy and compliance.
· Conducts monthly reconciliations for various bank accounts, identifying and resolving any discrepancies.
Financial reporting and Month-End Closing
· Assists with month-end closing processes, including preparing journal entries, and reconciling balance sheet accounts.
· Assists with the preparation and distribution of monthly reporting packages for departmental directors and managers.
· Prepares bi-weekly payroll, ensuring all employee payments are processed accurately and on time.
Other related duties as assigned.
