This appointment is for one or more Junior Clinical Fellows in Oncology, based at Southampton General Hospital. You will join the Cancer Care Group (Oncology and Supportive Care) and will participate in the management of patients with oncological conditions undergoing investigation and treatment.

The posts are available for 12 months in the first instance. Options include:

  • 12 months in oncology (rotating between teams in medical and clinical oncology)

At present all junior fellows participate in the out of hours rota, one including nights and the other evenings and weekends. The rotas have been redesigned to provide greater daytime continuity within the team whilst enhancing access to educational opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  1. To undertake care of oncology patients presenting as an emergency and following inpatient admission. You will work across clinical teams, specifically:
    a. Medical oncology subspecialty teams
    b. Clinical oncology subspecialty teams
  2. To undertake daily or as needed patient reviews for inpatients including co-ordination and review of investigations, discharge planning and liaison with and referral to other clinical teams
  3. To prescribe treatments including blood products, supportive care including non-SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) treatments, fluids, electrolytes and symptomatic therapies
  4. Opportunity to gain experience in undertaking procedures relevant to oncology, including bone marrow biopsy, tunnelled central catheter removal, insertion of catheters and drains, with appropriate training and supervision.
  5. To cross cover planned and unplanned leave of other junior doctors including where needed in other specialties within the care group
  6. To undertake care of patients undergoing clinical trials, showing evidence of training and understanding of Good Clinical Practice. Where required, appropriate training in clinical trial protocols will be provided.
  7. To engage in the care group’s clinical governance programme, including, for example, audit, clinic incident reporting and quality meetings.
  8. Attendance at the oncology clinics where time permits and subject to the interests and experience of the postholder.
  9. If interested, to participate in the collection and analysis of local data with a view to preparing and submitting papers for publication.
    You will work alongside other junior clinical fellows, Foundation Year doctors, foundation fellowship doctors, Internal Medicine Trainees and Higher Specialist Trainees and Specialty Doctors in oncology within a supportive, approachable team structure including ward nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and the wider subspecialty medical teams. All patient care is supervised by subspecialty consultants.
