The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development policy, public education and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.
The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years of experience in accounting, experience working for a charity or non-profit organization and a university degree in commerce, business, or accounting or a combination of education and experience.
  • Working toward Accounting designation CPA, CA/CGA is an asset.
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of current and acceptable financial practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated superior attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, project leadership, teamwork, and judgement.
  • Diplomacy, tact and decision-making ability, planning and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities to ensure timely completion of work within established deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills in ACCPAC, Excel
  • English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or any Indigenous language is an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 à 2 ans d’expérience en comptabilité, expérience au sein d’une association caritative ou d’une organisation à but non lucratif et un diplôme universitaire en commerce, affaires ou comptabilité, ou une combinaison d’éducation et d’expérience.

  • Grand souci du détail et de l’exactitude.
  • Une expérience de travail avec les communautés des Premières Nations est un atout.
  • Excellentes compétences interpersonnelles, gestion de projet, travail d’équipe et jugement.
  • Diplomatie, tact et capacité à prendre des décisions, planification et sens de l’organisation.
  • Aptitude avérée à effectuer plusieurs tâches à la fois et à fixer des priorités afin d’assurer la réalisation du travail dans les délais impartis.
  • Solides compétences informatiques (ACCPAC et Excel).
  • L’anglais est la langue de travail, mais la capacité à communiquer efficacement en français ou dans une langue autochtone est un atout.

Responsibilities:

The Assembly of First Nations is seeking two detail-oriented Junior Finance Officers who, under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, will be responsible for supporting finance officers to ensure costs are allocated according to established procedures. These procedures are in accordance with approved budgets, control of accounts and records in such areas as disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the successful candidates will have the following key duties and responsibilities:

  • Performs day to day financial activities including accounts payables and receivables, printing cheques, and posting journal entries.
  • Prepare journal entries, month-end accruals.
  • Assists with review of GST, PST, QST and NRT returns and payments.
  • Participate in audits and data collection efforts and preparing explanations to auditors,
  • Assist finance team with disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts.
  • Promptly anticipates and responds to information and action requests related to finance and relevant information throughout and across the Sector and other AFN Sectors
  • Supports data entry tasks of the Finance Sector
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer
