Junior Software Engineer - Backend (Go) - Agent Management

Splunk’s Agent Management team is looking for a junior backend software engineer (with Go) to join us. Our team is working on a brand-new solution that will manage the life cycle of thousands of data streaming agents throughout our customer base. The service will allow our customer’s to run uninterrupted while performing tasks such as maintenance and troubleshooting operation, software upgrades, security enhancements, health monitoring but will also improve live visibility and insight to their fleet of agents.
As a Backend Engineer you will develop and own features for the Agent Manager service. Your task will mostly around developing Go-based backend covering whole development lifecycle phases. Engineers within our team are working on development of both UI and server components as well the CI/CD of the service. They will ensure that observability is built into the system, Service Level Objectives (SLO) are defined, supervised and met and that engineers are alerted when performance degrades. They will work with senior members of other teams in the Splunk eco-system to ensure their services provide the required functionality and that integration is flawless. They will collaborate with Product Management to translate business requirements into technical tasks and provide an estimation for implementing them. Success will be measured by your ability to develop and maintain a service that is performant and serviceable while meeting execution goals.
From our side, we would like to welcome you to our greenfield project and our team of highly skilled developers. In our daily operations we spend a lot of time on system design and try to figure out best way to move forward. We are building a full stack platform, and we will own both our testing and CI/CD processes. You will play a critical role in establishing the foundation and ground rules for the future, and we want to use your knowledge and experience in software craftsmanship. Our backend technology stack is built around Go (mainly, for new components) and C++ (to ensure compatibility with existing components). On the front end you can expect to see React. But more than the technology stack, we value your programming skills and experience in driving development work for yourself and your team.
Within our team we have to create solutions and face technical challenges. To name just a few, there is new solution design and architecture, scalability (customers could have 100,000+ agents to manage), multi-platform approach (as we need to meet customers using both on-prem and cloud-only deployment models), complexity of the solution (we need to deliver a product with both backend and front-end components created using modern coding standards combined with testing and CI/CD models) and finally cybersecurity.

REQUIREMENTS:

Fundamentals in software engineering: system design, data structures and algorithms. Those skills are needed as we are developing brand-new solutions.
From a backend perspective, coding experience that matches our tech stack. We have a strong focus on Go. If you also have some experience with C++, this will be your strongest asset.
Additional knowledge/experience of front-end technology (mainly React) may be an asset, but is not required.
Familiarity with distributed systems in public cloud environments such as AWS (preferred), GCP, Azure and familiarity with the services available on these platforms.
Experience in developing CI/CD systems and test automation frameworks
Ability to document your work for the benefit of the team
Knowledge of communication paradigms, including REST, websockets, network layers and HTTP

This is a junior role, so no previous experience is required. We value your skills, openness and collaboration over your previous positions. We are looking for recent graduates or students in their final year of a Masters degree. We are interested in people who can work full time, but if necessary we will work to find the best fit between your working hours and your university lecturers. We are a hybrid working team, so it is our hope that you will be able to meet with us in the office an average of two days a week.
