We are seeking a passionate and culturally aware individual for the role of Kai-whakahaere ā-Tūhono. This position will support the Pou Tūhono - Iwi Relationship Manager in ensuring that Council’s obligations are met through proactive engagement and culturally appropriate policies and processes. The Kai-whakahaere ā-Tūhono will play a vital role in preserving and strengthening our relationships with communities across the district.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficient in Te Reo Māori with a sound understanding of tikanga Māori.
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field or significant practical experience in Māori engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with iwi/Māori.
  • Experience providing cultural advice and contributing to policy development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey Māori perspectives to both Māori and non-Māori audiences.
  • Knowledge of the Waikato region, including the iwi and hapū constructs, is highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining partnerships with iwi/Māori, fostering a culture focused on effective relationships aligned with Council’s strategic direction.
  • Provide advice and support on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Māori, Te Reo Māori, and mātauranga Māori to ensure Council’s decisions and processes are informed.
  • Contribute to Council policy, planning, and strategy development, ensuring opportunities for meaningful Māori engagement.
  • Support internal staff capability development, providing ongoing learning opportunities in Te Ao Māori.
  • Facilitate cultural protocols such as pōwhiri/mihi whakatau for internal and external events, ensuring Tikanga Māori is respected and incorporated.
  • Enhance Council’s engagement with the community, supporting positive relationships and advocating their perspectives in council activities.
