This is a 16-week position starting on May 5, 2025. The term may extend up to August 31, 2025, offering flexibility to accommodate scheduling needs throughout the summer.

Purpose
Grey Roots Museum and Archives is a 40,000 square foot facility with six exhibit galleries, four of which house travelling exhibits from other museums and temporary exhibits from our own collection. We feature Moreston Heritage Village, with twelve period buildings filled with period and time-appropriate artefacts and these buildings are publicly accessible to visitors from late June through September each year. Grey Roots offers numerous special events and community programs, especially during the summer months.
Responsibilities
Under the KidsCamp Lead, the KidsCamp Assistant’s primary duty is to assist with coordinating, researching, developing and delivering seven weeks of KidsCamp activities and programs. The student also has a role to play in helping with special events and additional programming for both children and adults, as required.

We are busy during the May to Labour Day period with school groups travelling to Grey Roots to experience a variety of education programs, PA Day programs, seven weeks of KidsCamp (held Monday through Friday for children 5-10), Group Tours, special events, a summer travelling exhibit, and Moreston Heritage Village which is open seven days a week from late June to Labour Day with demonstrations and interpreters throughout the site.

  • Research, develop and deliver daily programs for various age groups
  • Work with staff and outside agencies to provide safe, educational programming opportunities for elementary students.
  • Work with staff and public health to provide safe, educational programming for summer day camp registrants.
  • Arrange for necessary materials and equipment to be available for activities such as craft materials, toys, games, etc.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for children, other staff, and volunteers
  • Assist in training youth and other volunteers (Junior Interpreters 13 – 17)
  • Assist in the production of promotional materials to attract participants and volunteers
  • Assist in maintaining medical, emergency, safety and permission documents as well as other administrative details
  • Maintain and demonstrate open and effective communication
  • Candidates will have, or are willing to obtain, First Aid/CPR training and a police records check.

Other Duties

  • Participates in Grey Roots programs and operations
  • Assists in all activities, adult, and children’s programming, both on and off site
  • Maintains skills at a high level. Participates in training and development opportunities as suggested and arranged by the Programs Coordinator
  • May be required to write about topics relating to Grey Roots for social media, newspapers, etc. as required
  • Responsible as an employee for Occupational Health and Safety

Working Conditions
Normal hours of work are 35 hours per week. Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours on evenings or weekends will be required as determined by the operational hours of Grey Roots. Compensation for the same will be in accordance with County policies.
Work is often performed in public spaces both indoors and outdoors and involves a high degree of contact with children and the general public.

Knowledge and Skill

  • A student, returning school in the upcoming academic year working towards a post-secondary diploma/degree in museum studies, education, or related field.
  • Good organizational, time management, verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize, problem solve, and handle multiple duties and interruptions effectively.
  • Extensive children’s camp, school or daycare experience – planning and facilitating
  • Excellent communication skills with various groups (children, adults, organizations)
  • Experience with children of different abilities and circumstances
  • Knowledge of Moreston Heritage Village and Grey Roots’ program activities
  • Excellent public speaking skills, creativity and research skills; ability to engage with visitors of all ages.
  • Friendly, outgoing, courteous personality; basic knowledge of Grey County history an asset.
  • Previous customer service experience and training is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario education curriculum is an asset.
