POSITION OVERVIEW
Position title: Kim Lab: Brain Development Research Specialist (Assistant Specialist Rank)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $61,300 - $68,300.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Brain Development Research Specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Euiseok Kim, the assistant specialist will contribute to a research program investigating the connectivity, function, development, and genetic identity of neural circuits.
Duties will include maintaining lab mouse colonies, performing genotyping to sort out transgenic animals, performing histology experiments followed by rodent stereotaxic surgery, microdissection of the animal tissues, fluorescence microscopy including confocal and wide-field, molecular biology, cell culture, and data analysis to investigate the neuronal connectivity in mammalian brains. The selected candidate will be expected to stay current with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals. This position will require excellent organizational skills and the ability to successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- B.S./B.A. degree or higher (or an equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience, molecular, cell, and developmental biology, biochemistry, virology, or a related discipline.
- Evidence of research experience in molecular and cell biology/neuroscience, virology, or related biomedical fields.
- A minimum of one year post-baccalaureate research experience in immunohistochemistry, animal tissue micro-dissection and micro-injection, confocal microscopy, and widefield fluorescent microscopy.
