Description:

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Matric/Grade 12 (Ideal)
  • Assistant chef skills programme or similar (Advantageous)

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is preferred but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Physical stamina and ability to handle repetitive tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, such as pots, pans, or trays.

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Attention to Detail: Ensure all items are properly cleaned and sanitized.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to stand for long periods and carry out physically demanding tasks.
  • Time Management: Work efficiently to keep up with the pace of the kitchen during busy periods.

Responsibilities:

To manage the cleanliness of kitchen equipment, dishes, and the overall kitchen environment as well as assisting with basic food preparation tasks. Play a critical support role, ensuring that the kitchen staff have clean tools and a hygienic space to work in. The sculler may also assist with minor kitchen tasks like prepping ingredients or disposing of waste.KEY RESULT AREAS:

Cleaning and Washing:

  • Wash and sanitize dishes, glassware, silverware, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment.
  • Operate dishwashers or manually clean items depending on the equipment available.
  • Clean and maintain all work surfaces, floors, and kitchen areas to ensure hygiene.

Basic Kitchen Assistance:

  • Assist kitchen staff by prepping ingredients such as peeling vegetables, chopping, or portioning.
  • Transport supplies between storage areas and the kitchen.
  • Ensure that waste is properly disposed of and recycling is handled correctly.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Clean and store kitchen tools and utensils properly.
  • Regularly inspect dishwashing equipment and kitchen tools to ensure they are in proper working order.
  • Report any equipment faults or maintenance issues to the supervisor.

Stock and Supply Assistance:

  • Assist with unpacking and organizing deliveries of kitchen supplies.
  • Ensure adequate stock of cleaning supplies, including dish soap, sponges, and sanitizing chemicals.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Follow strict hygiene and sanitation protocols to comply with health and safety standards.
  • Adhere to food safety regulations, including safe handling of cleaning chemicals and proper disposal of food waste.

Supporting the Kitchen Team:

  • Help with setting up workstations and ensuring the kitchen is ready for service.
  • Respond to the needs of chefs and kitchen staff, including fetching utensils or ingredients.
  • Assist in organizing and cleaning storage areas, including refrigerators, freezers, and dry goods sections.
