About Us
The Magistrates’ Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.
About the Role
The Melbourne Magistrates’ Koori Court has the highest volume of hearings of any Koori Court in Victoria and represents a dynamic and fast paced practice environment with full day hearings, representing serious matters being held consistently each week.
The Koori Court Support Coordinator is required to develop strong relationships and provide authoritative advice, support and assistance to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their families attending the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
The Koori Court Support Coordinator will be responsible for the sound delivery of all key administrative and coordination tasks associated with the Melbourne Koori Court by engaging with the participants, family and other significant stakeholders. The Koori Court Support Coordinator will have advanced knowledge of local community support services and provide information and referral to culturally appropriate services, as required.
Reporting to the Team Leader of Koori Courts and Manager of listings of Melbourne Magistrates Court, this position will work within the Melbourne Magistrates’ Koori Court to assist the Court in providing a more culturally appropriate response to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal division.
This position operates within a demanding and sensitive environment that requires the capacity to maintain a high level of confidentiality, exercise sound judgement, build relationships and liaise effectively with a wide range of key stakeholders, court staff and the judiciary.
About You
The Koori Court Support Coordinator must have client support/relationship management skills which are of a high standard to work and build on when collaborating with diverse groups of key stakeholders such as; Koori/Aboriginal clients, Koori/Aboriginal families, Elders and Respected Persons (ERPs), Magistrates, Youth Justice Workers and Department of Justice and Regulation Corrections.
