Description:
About Us
The Children’s Court of Victoria has jurisdiction under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 to hear cases involving children and young people up to the age of 18 years, and in some cases up to 19 years. It has a Family Division and a Criminal Division and it sits at locations throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
About the Role
In July 2016 the Broadmeadows Children’s Court commenced a ground-breaking pilot program called Marram-Ngala Ganbu (’We are One’ in Woiwurrung language). The Marram-Ngala Ganbu Koori Family Hearing Day aims to improve outcomes for Koori children involved in child protection proceedings, by providing a culturally appropriate process to assist in decision making. Marram-Ngala Ganbu also aims to improve adherence to the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle set out in the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.
Reporting to the Broadmeadows Koori Services Coordinator, the Koori Family Support Officer plays a critical role in the Marram-Ngala Ganbu team, providing non-legal support for Aboriginal families with matters in the family division attending the Broadmeadows Children’s Court.
About You
We are looking for candidates that are able to engage sensitively and effectively with Koori families who come to the Children’s Court of Victoria, providing them with support in a way that reduces their stress, ensures their cultural needs are understood, and that their voices are heard.
