JOB SUMMARY:

Entry level Research Technician position will assist in a research lab studying the pathogenesis of animal protozoan pathogens. The incumbent will assist the Principle Investigator and other lab members in molecular, cellular, and animal model research. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School or Equivalent
Work Experience 0+ years work experience in a related health care setting or in a clinical or research laboratory setting; or 12 semester hours of academic training in biology and/or chemistry/ or registration as a Certified Laboratory Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or an equivalent registry; or successful completion of a formal program of instruction for laboratory assistants at a hospital or academic institution.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Bachelor’s Degree - Biological Sciences OR related majors
Work Experience 1+ years or more years’ of college laboratory research experience

JOB KNOWLEDGE

Firm Job Knowledge - Firm working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

10% - Sit (stationary position) for prolonged period

10% - Use hands or feet to operate or handle machinery, equipment, etc

5% - Move, transport, raise or lower

Responsibilities:

JOB DUTIES:

25% - Essential - Carry out cell culture procedures, in vitro assays and maintain mammalian cell lines and parasite strains.
25% - Essential - Perform and assist in experiments using standard molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, molecular cloning, western blotting, and protein expression and purification.
25% - Essential - Operate various preparative and analytical instrumentations. Shipping reagents and parasite strains. Help the principle investigator to inspect lab safety issues.
15% - Essential - Unpack received items, clean and organize the lab. Bookkeeping the inventory.
10% - Essential - Prepare tissue culture reagents and media and commonly used reagents and buffers for molecular biology.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as Lead - Acts as a Lead by guiding the work of others who perform essentially the same work.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department’s budget.
