Description:
Overview:
This position is responsible for the oversight of data collection, management, inventory, analysis, and curation in compliance with various agency requirements and guidelines, as well as general standards of scientific quality. Other aspects of this role will include scheduling, managing, and conducting archaeological fieldwork and research as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expertise with artifact identification and analysis
- Peer review draft reports and desktop background reviews produced by Project Archaeologists and Principal Investigators
- Author technical reports, research designs, and other technical documents, as appropriate and needed
- Conduct timely processing, analysis, and curation of artifacts and records within schedule and budget constraints
- Actively participate in professional organizations and development
- Mentor and train junior staff
- Assist with or lead archaeological field investigations as needed
- Act as liaison and coordinator for fieldwork logistics, data management, and progress reporting between field crews, contractors, the Principal Investigator or Program Manager, and clients
- Candidates selected for an interview will be required to provide a technical writing sample for which they served as the primary author.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts/Science degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
- 4 years’ of experience in archaeological investigations, such as Phase I surveys, Phase II testing, or Phase III data recoveries, artifact analysis, and report writing on projects in Texas
- 2 years of supervisory experience in laboratory work, with preferred experience in historical artifact analysis
- Working knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA, Antiquities Code of Texas, and NEPA
- Working knowledge of curation standards for the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory and the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio preferred
- Proven ability to direct and mentor field and lab technicians
- Exceptional organizational and record keeping, critical thinking, and time management skills
- Ability to successfully delegate tasks
- Ability to successfully manage multiple collections concurrently
- Experience writing technical reports from start to finish
- Experience working on testing and data recovery projects preferred
- Experience conducting archival research preferred
- Experience with digital data collection platforms and Global Positioning Systems
- Must be able to work in the field under various terrain and weather conditions as needed
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently
- Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged time periods; dig with a variety of hand tools, bend, kneel, and stand
