Hiring Unit:
Department of Geography

Position Summary:

  • Assisting and providing guidance to students using the following analyzers: Gas Chromatographs, TOC/TN analyzer, pH and Conductivity meters, Spectrophotometer.
  • Assisting and providing guidance to students using the following equipment: Drying Ovens, Vacuum and water filtration pumps, Soil and plant tissue grinders, De-Ionized water still.
  • General Lab Maintenance
  • Ensuring counters are not overly cluttered and passages are clear
  • Ensuring proper safety procedures are followed
  • Monitoring fridges and freezers in all labs to ensure they are operating at proper temperatures
  • Washing glassware
  • Shipping water or soil samples nationally and or internationally for analyses
  • Hazardous waste disposal
  • Ordering and replacing gas Cylinders running GC and TOC/TN analyzers
  • Maintaining excel sheet used by students to schedule time on equipment
  • Maintaining chemical inventory in 609 and ordering chemicals needed for Grad student research
  • Preparation of equipment for field courses

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Good communication skills
  • Good organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to students from a mix of educational science backgrounds
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree an asset
  • At least one year of relevant experience in the field and lab preferred

Location: This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
