EDUCATION:

A Bachelor degree is required, preferably in biology or chemistry.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Storeroom and/or media preparation experience is desirable.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation of basic science equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares microbiology media, chemical solutions, and other materials for biology and chemistry teaching labs under the direction of faculty members. Assists instructors and laboratory assistants in the performance of their lab duties. Must be knowledgeable in operation of basic biology equipment such as automatic pipettes, autoclave, stirrers and hotplates, spectrophotometers, fume hoods, microscopes, weigh balance, water baths, pH meters, and lab dishwashers.
  • Conducts online searches for products and lab equipment. Obtain quotes for items and equipment when necessary or as requested by faculty.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for the department which requires submitting order to purchasing, following up with vendors when orders are delayed, and checking to make sure orders have been invoiced.
  • Keeps track of expenditures and open orders via budget monitoring.
  • Prepares contractor agreements for routine maintenance or repair of lab equipment - microscopes, pipettes, biosafety cabinets, water systems, liquid nitrogen, autoclave, etc.
  • Stock storeroom with lab basic items such as paper towels, nitrile gloves, soap, first aid kits, etc.

  • Submits work orders for lab maintenance and repairs such as painting, plumbing, floor cleaning, etc.
  • Uses petty cash to make departmental purchases from local suppliers, when necessary, e.g. Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Home Depot, etc.
  • Receives purchased items for the department and distributes them to the proper lab and/or faculty. Replenishes needed supplies.
  • Supervises student worker(s)
  • Refills liquid nitrogen in cell banks/dewars.
  • Sees that all labs are clean and in proper compliance with OSHA safety guidelines, e.g., Material Safety Data Sheets provided for each chemical in the department and in the lab where the chemical is housed.
  • Autoclaves and disposes of all department waste, including biohazardous waste.
  • Ensures safe disposal of all chemicals, including the contracting of an environmental waste disposal company when necessary.
  • Supervises/monitor labs or proctor exam when needed, at the request of faculty and help with departmental events.
