Description
The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Lab Technical will support the basic and translational science research group assisting in lab support while predominantly focusing on experimental support surrounding the use of advanced micro-physiologic cell culture systems. The laboratory in in the Health Research Innovations Centre at the University of Calgary Foothills Campus.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support of the research team through providing skilled technical procedures with particular focus on the maintenance and day-to-day handling of a micro-physiologic lung on chip (LoC) system
  • Assist with other common experiments within the laboratory (e.g. molecular, microbial, or cell culture assays) as directed by the principal investigator
  • Maintain detailed records of experimental protocols and data acquisition to contribute to publications within the research field
  • Ensure the maintenance and support the ordering of laboratory reagents
  • Identify professional development needs and skill priorities
  • Adhere to all University of Calgary policies and regulatory requirements
  • Adhere to biosafety standards including the use of human tissues
  • Provide aid in the training and supervision of members of the lab
  • Maintain SOPs and monitor key lab practices

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience is required
  • 1 or more years of technical experience is an asset
  • Previous experience working with cell culture is an asset
  • Previous experience with molecular biology (e.g. Western blot, PCR, ELISA) is an asset
  • Previous experience working with confocal microscopy is an asset
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Understanding of the theory and practical application of the scientific method and technical procedures is required
  • Knowledge of University or industry Research environment is an asset
