The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Faculty of X invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose is to be responsible for the management, maintenance, or control of platelet biology and thrombosis imaging research. This may include in-scope supervision of other lab staff, managing the laboratory and research projects, and ensuring that as technologies change, the laboratory adapts to and learns new technologies. The candidate will support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others. This position works closely with the Principal Investigator in areas of protocol development, standard operating protocol development, development of research projects and proposals, and contributing to and assisting in submitting research grant proposals.
The desired candidate will use biochemical and immuno-assays, advanced microscopy, image analysis software and/or scientific programming; and the research will focus on platelet biology, thrombosis and haemostasis cell biology.
This the position will initially commence at 60% (3 days a week) with the potential to become 80% (4 days a week) and then full-time as the research progresses.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of Platelet/Thrombosis laboratory
  • Assist with training and supervision of other students/staff in the operation of equipment and lab protocols
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of research
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Budget and ordering involvement, including developing reports, tracking expenses, reconciliation of accounts, and managing efin project records
  • Involved in day-to-day supervision of students, monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Review and update of laboratory’s SOP
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conducts literature reviews, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for scholarly publications
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to the manager to ensure the manager is kept informed of activities and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and collaborator service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree - Cellular and Molecular Biology or related field - Essential
  • Master’s degree - Cellular and Molecular Biology or related field - Desirable
  • Minimum 1 year of technical experience in a field of discipline
  • 1 to 5 years of Phlebotomy experience or willingness to learn and undertake the course and to take up the practice is essential.
  • 1 to 5 years of supervisory experience is an asset
  • Specialized Certification-Biosafety and Biosecurity in Contamination Level 2 laboratories
  • Efficient in ELISA methods, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, DNA and RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, Volocity Image Analysis software, calcium signal imaging and assays, SDS-PAGE
  • Experience with co-immunoprecipitation GST fusion protein pull-down approach is an advantage
  • Ability to LEARN quickly and to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to work with whole human and animal blood and with blood component cells
  • Experience with various biological samples (e.g. blood, tissues, urine, etc.) is an advantage
  • Previous experience with mouse work is an advantage
  • Ability to provide technical support/ advice for team members
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of techniques related to cell biology and or microscopy researchMust be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
