Description:

ABOUT US

Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.
This is an exciting opportunity to join both the Divisional Operations team, and the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) Core Technical Team, (where you will work with Professor Pomiankowski’s research group). The Biosciences Operations Team plays a key role in supporting all areas of the Division of Biosciences, either directly, or through close liaison with other service partners.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role has a dual purpose: to work within the GEE Core Technical Team, supporting a research funded project led by Professor Andrew Pomiankowski (the Director of the Division); and to work as part of the Biosciences Operations team to cover multiple functions in laboratory housekeeping and coordination.
This role will ensure the smooth running of the Pomiankowski laboratory, whilst working with the GEE Core Technical Team, to support other research groups in the department. The husbandry work you will provide, will support a research funded project in collaboration with the University of Sheffield. The project aims to explore the evolution of honest sexual traits and interrogate a classic theory of sexual selection using Teleopsis dalmanni (stalk-eyed flies) as the model organism.
In this technical role, the essential Divisional support includes: providing the central autoclaving service for the sterilisation of equipment/media and waste. Maintain the Division’s laboratory glass/plastic washing, liaising with departmental teams for timely delivery and collections. Arrange servicing and repairs of specialist research equipment (including glass washer, autoclaves, ice-machines etc.). Assist with movement of equipment when required. Hold health and safety responsibilities to maintain a compliant working environment, and immediately report any defects or health and safety hazards.
We will consider applications to work on a job share basis wherever possible.
This role is an open-ended contract with a funding end date of 31/08/2028 in the first instance.
This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/human-resources/conditions-service-research-teaching-and-professional-services-staff for more information.
