0.4 FTE, every Tuesday and Wednesday 6:00 to 4:30 with the ability to pick up additional hours
OBJECTIVE SUMMARY: The lab assistant obtains and processes capillary and venous blood samples from patients of the Snoqualmie Hospital system including its hospital, all clinics, and emergency department. The lab assistant plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and integrity of results by collecting high-quality samples. They are the primary liaison between the laboratory and its customers, including patients, coworkers, and other departments.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Successful completion of a phlebotomy program through a post-secondary school or college accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education
- Current WA State Medical-Assistant/Phlebotomist certificate, or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days with proof of application
SKILLS:
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection using sterile technique.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Customer service
- Ability to work with a diverse patient group including infants, children, and adults
- Ability to complete waived testing
- Knowledge of safety procedures and proper use of PPE
- Ability to complete various clerical duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Potential exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, toxic substances including chemical disinfectants, and other conditions associated with a hospital environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to meet the physical requirements required to perform associated laboratory tasks including:
- Lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds
- Full range of body motion, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination
- Standing for long periods
- Stooping, bending, and reaching

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs venipuncture and/or capillary blood collection as ordered by provider
- Uses IT systems to register patients, schedule appointments, process orders, enter results, and communicate with providers and other departments
- Processes samples to prepare for laboratory testing
- Performs waived patient testing and quality control
- Performs other clerical duties such as scanning, faxing, and filing.
- Participates in training of new staff and student externs
- Complies with all local, state, and federal requirements for healthcare institutions and medical laboratories including, but not limited to, CLIA, WA DOH, and CLIA.
- Strictly adheres to all Snoqualmie Valley Hospital system procedures and policies as well as Snoqualmie Valley Hospital Laboratory-specific procedures and policies
- Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and staff
- Maintains supply levels by restocking, taking inventory, and communicating needs to laboratory management
- Works effectively as a team member within the department, and with other departments, to provide quality service through respectful communication, cooperation, and collaboration
- Uses various methods to communicate such as email, fax, instant messaging, EMR messages, and telephone
- Recognizes and corrects problems associated with orders and samples before forwarding to technical staff
