Description:
JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a permanent full-time lab instructor for first-year chemistry lab courses. The successful candidate will teach three different first-year lab courses and will work with other lab instructors to coordinate lab curriculum, prepare lab manuals, and set lab schedules for these courses. UFV lab courses are taught only by qualified instructors and do not involve teaching assistants. Technical support is provided by qualified lab technicians who are responsible for preparation of all lab materials and chemicals, maintenance of instrumentation, and general physical lab management.
A commitment to departmental and university service such as committee work is required. The position also requires some scholarly activity, the definition of which includes a broad range of activities according to the UFV Collective Agreement. Examples of scholarly activity include, but are not limited to, curriculum development, lab manual preparation or modification, and pedagogical research. It is also desirable for candidates to have an interest in participating in community outreach, pursuing professional development activities, and/or exploring ways of including various cultures including indigenous ones. Candidates should also be aware that the University Act requires that public universities be non-sectarian and non-political.
We seek applicants who share our commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Candidates must be willing to hold both themselves and their students to high academic standards. High quality, academically rigorous first-year lab instruction plays a crucial role at UFV as we serve a student body with variable high school backgrounds that are sometimes significantly lacking in lab experience.
Currently, the annual salary for this position ranges from $70,437 to $112,872. Initial placement on the salary scale depends upon experience and qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates must hold a MSc in any area of experimental chemistry and should have two or more years of experience teaching undergraduate labs in chemistry (experience as a graduate teaching assistant will be considered).
- Experience teaching first-year chemistry labs is prefered.
- Evidence of success in teaching must be provided in the form of student evaluations and/or peer-evaluations.
