The Opportunity:
Avantor is looking for a dedicated and experienced Laboratory Inventory Manager to join our leadership team based in Cambridge, UK. In this position you’ll take ownership of management of scientific consumables for 2,500+ scientists and line management responsibilities for a Stock Service Lead and associated line reports.
This role will be a full-time permanent position based in a brand-new facility at the customer site - The Discovery Centre, Bio-Medical Campus in Cambridge. Working hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 – 17:00 (core business hours)
THE TEAM
As a Laboratory Materials Manager, you will join a team of seven highly skilled Managers, each a Subject Matter Expert in their respective fields. Together, you will lead and deliver a wide variety of services to our customers.
You will have direct responsibility for the Stores Service Lead and the Stores team, who manage the inventory of consumables, reagents, and chemicals. You will be part of our Lab and Product Services business unit, which supports major pharmaceutical companies and laboratories worldwide in research and development across the Life Sciences industry.
We’re looking for:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, a science-related field, or equivalent experience in laboratory operations.
EXPERIENCE:
- Extensive experience as a Scientific Materials Manager in the fast-paced pharmaceutical industry is essential.
- 3–5 years of experience in line management, including coaching and motivating large teams or service leaders, with exposure to second-line management.
- Proven expertise in quality and stock management.
- Strong ability to liaise with senior stakeholders and customers regularly.
- Experience collaborating with multiple business functions such as Science, Procurement, and Account Management, with a clear understanding of their roles in the business.
- Desirable Qualifications (not essential):
- Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma
- Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) certification
- Technical Skills:
- High level of IT literacy and proficiency in systems, including:
- Excel, Power BI, SmartSheets
- Data provision, analysis, management, and scrutiny
- Cost centre journaling and data manipulation
- Procurement platforms (COUPA & SAP)
- KPI metrics reporting and automated spreadsheet setup
How you’ll thrive and create an impact:
- Senior point of contact for scientific consumable delivery, inventory management and reporting (stock, data and spend management)
- To be able to ensure the best value and timely deliveries to the laboratory space via a digital inventory management platform
- Ability to effectively engage and communicate with the customer’s Governance, Procurement and Scientific functions to ensure positive outcomes regarding consumable management and cost centre spend
- Comprehend and articulate the operational service provision to a high level to be able to respond and direct at multiple requestor levels of understanding and to guide the UK Heads
- Delivering a robust performance management strategy to your direct report, and to the full operational team of 6 that they manage on-site
