Description:

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisors, the Laboratory Technician 2 is responsible for sampling and performing standard analyses on water, wastewater and industrial waste samples as well as field testing and report preparation.

As the Laboratory Technician 2 you will:

  • Obtain samples on a regular basis from various locations in the Department infrastructure which includes the wastewater collection, treatment and disposal system, the water supply and distribution system, the land drainage, collection, and disposal system, and the solid waste collection and disposal system.
  • Perform standard analysis on wastewater, industrial waste, potable water, sludge, digester gas and air samples according to established procedures in the laboratory standard analytical reference manuals and the laboratory safety manual.
  • Operate and calibrate basic or specialized equipment and instrumentation used in sampling and analytical procedures.
  • Install and operate automatic sampling equipment and maintains equipment in good working order by conducting regular preventative maintenance and minor repairs, as required.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance, diagnostics and minor repairs to laboratory equipment and instruments as required.
  • Using a computer, input analytical and quality control data into the Laboratory Information Management System and 311 on a regular basis, tabulates data, uses statistical procedures and represents data graphically, as required.
  • Participate in field sampling and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Maintain an accurate record of work performed reports results accurately and promptly, and writes reports on work performed, as required.
  • Train other staff in the use of proper analytical techniques and procedures, as required.
  • Assure integrity of analytical data by following necessary and recommended quality assurance procedures including participating in inter-laboratory quality assurance studies.
  • Order the necessary supplies and reagents for area of responsibility.
  • Address concerns of general public related to water quality inquiries/complaints, as required.
  • Maintain laboratory vehicle in good operating condition by regularly performing routine maintenance checks and arranging for vehicle repairs, as required.
  • Participate in Safety Training sessions and Safety Committee.
  • Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.

YOUR EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus successful completion of a recognized university/community college program in Science/Science Laboratory Technology (or equivalent) that includes at least three full courses (18 credit hours) in Chemistry.
  • Additional courses in quality assurance, statistics and instrumentation would be preferred.
  • Two years of previous acceptable laboratory experience and training is essential.
  • General knowledge of computer software, such as Microsoft Access, Excel (statistics, charting) and Word.
  • Ability to use, or learn to use within two months of the appointment, a computer for data entry, tabulation and retrieval, database queries and quality control charting using the Laboratory Information Management System and 311.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
