Description:

BEAMLINE / PROJECT / ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The Structural Biology Laboratory (SBL) at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is organized as a User Support Laboratory. It employs molecular biology, biochemical, biophysical, and structural biology tools to study the atomic architecture of proteins and protein complexes. In addition to external users of Elettra and FERMI, SBL supports two main in-house research groups:

  • RU1: Structural biology of DNA helicases and DNA/RNA-binding proteins.
  • RU2: Protein Targets for Drug Discovery.

External users and the members of the RU1 and RU2 groups, led by their Principal Investigators, use shared infrastructures and cutting-edge instrumentation. SBL has recently undergone significant upgrades, enhancing its protein production, biophysical characterization, and crystallization workflows. New instrumentation has been implemented to ensure high-purity sample preparation and highly automated crystallization set-ups.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will join the Structural Biology Laboratory staff as a Lab Technician, under the supervision of the Lab Manager. She/he is expected to contribute to the success of the activities of both external users and in-house research groups. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing relations with technical specialists and vendors, overseeing the entire purchasing process for consumables and new instrumentation, and coordinating storage and installation.
  • Ensuring that the lab environment remains safe, clean, and organized.
  • Assisting and providing training to lab users in good laboratory practices and the proper use of common equipment.
  • Collaborating with other groups and units, such as purchasing or infrastructure teams, maintaining communication and coordination with colleagues.

QUALIFICATIONS

A technical diploma with a solid understanding of the processes and requirements of a structural biology laboratory is required, together with practical and theoretical experience with laboratory instrumentation. Previous experience as a lab technician in a similar biology laboratory is also required.
Deep knowledge of chromatographic techniques would be considered a plus.
Understanding of purchasing procedures in an Italian public institution is desired.
Good written and verbal communication skills in English are essential; a working knowledge of Italian is desirable.
Strong time management skills, flexibility, versatility, and the ability to prioritize tasks are expected, together with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

The appointment envisioned is a permanent position, with level and salary commensurate with the qualifications and previous experience of the candidate. A trial period is expected as per “CCNL Industria metalmeccanica e della installazione di impianti”.
Applications should include a full curriculum vitae (preferably using the European Curriculum Vitae Format in PDF) signed by the applicant, with the names and contact information (including electronic mail) of at least two professional references.
The ranking of eligible candidates resulting from this selection procedure may be used for additional appointments within the following 24 months.
The interviews may be held via video conferencing.
