This is a full-time, one-year temporary position (with the possibility of renewal) supporting the Bioengineering Teaching Lab at McGill University.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Chair, participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology. Prepares materials and equipment. Compiles data. Demonstrates techniques. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares and sets up materials and equipment, and performs a variety of assays, analyses, and tests, in preparation for Bioengineering undergraduate courses in the teaching lab.
- Participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established protocols for Bioengineering courses.
- Demonstrates the operation of apparatus or techniques.
- Records results, performs calculations, and compiles data. Maintains records and files.
- Ensures cleanliness and security in the teaching labs.
- Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
- Maintains inventory. Purchases equipment and materials.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge

Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
We are looking for a friendly, service-oriented colleague, who likes to work with students and academics and who enjoys the university environment. Previous experience in a wet laboratory is required. Must be organized, meticulous, accurate, and autonomous in the execution of tasks. Team spirit, taking initiative, good judgment, and solution orientation are appreciated. Needed are experience with established methodologies in fields such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology, and ideally an understanding of basic engineering principles. Experience with the following lab equipment, techniques and software is an asset: Equipment: pipettors, pH meters, Bunsen burner, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, electrophoresis, potentiostat, thermocycler, Chemidoc and 3D printers, Techniques: pipetting, DNA and protein handling (modification, purification, quantification and visualisation), 3D printing, nanoparticles, microfluidics, LFA, Software: Image Lab, ImageJ, iControl, CAD, ChituBox, JMP. DEC or BSc in laboratory and science-related fields are preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and French. The location may vary depending on lab sessions. Knowledge of French and English will be necessary as McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties will require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at level 4.
