POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Technician, reporting to the Team Leader and/or Resource Technologist, collects, receives, accessions and sorts specimens for testing. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for and performs a variety of laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of a Lead, Laboratory Technician. The position supports a 24 hour / 7 days a week operation working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Laboratory Technician will work in Receipt & Dispatch - Rapid Response within the Division of Specimen Management.
The Specimen Management Division at the Hospital for Sick Children is the gateway between patients and the laboratory. Phlebotomist and Laboratory Technicians play a critical role in the procurement, processing, and analyses of samples with a high level of expertise and accuracy. As valued members of the health care team your work will assist patient care providers to determine the best treatment and management plans for patients.
The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Responsibilities:

  • Practice and perform a variety of laboratory procedures with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with the policies, processes and procedures of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine
  • Maintain competence in the receiving, handling, processing, identification, recording, labeling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory testing
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to DPLM procedures
  • Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take appropriate corrective action and maintain documentation of laboratory equipment
  • Actively participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to meet DPLM objectives
  • Recognize unusual situations and reports immediately to an MLT
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Recognize unsafe work practices, potential hazards and unusual occurrences in the work area
  • Assist in maintaining inventory control to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
  • Maintain competency as a Laboratory Technician through participation in training and continuing education
  • Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned by an MLT, Resource Technologist or Team Leader
  • Follow all aspects of the Quality System
