QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- 3 year Community College Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) Licensed with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist preferred
- Certification as a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist an asset
Experience:
- 2 years of working experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnician, or a Histotechnologist in a commercial or academic laboratory setting
- Experience conducting research, providing guidance and overseeing the work of team members
- Experience with flow cytometry would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated technical/clinical skills including grossing, staining, and lab techniques
- Knowledge of common laboratory practices, safe handling procedures (including chemical storage and disposal), WHMIS and MSDS
- Ability to provide service to internal and external stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
- Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager, Administration and Finance, the Laboratory Technician serves as the key technical resource for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The role provides support for core operations of research laboratories and departmental research facilitation in histopathology including tissue grossing, processing and embedding, microtome/cryo-sectioning, basic tissue staining, and immunohistochemistry. The role provides technical expertise to faculty, learners, and residents, and manages departmental core facilities and equipment. The role develops standard operating procedures that ensure compliance with relevant Occupational Health and Safety standards, and demonstrates correct operation to users. The role will support the educational mission of the department by orienting learners to course- and research-related equipment.
