Description:

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the development, administration and implementation of the daily activities and tasks performed in the Centre for Healthy Communities (CHC) while working closely with the Program Coordinators and other faculty in the school of Applied Health. The Laboratory Technologist works under the supervision of the Operations Manager of Clinics and Labs to provide guidance, reinforce skills taught by faculty and provide evaluative input into instructors’ grading rubrics. The Laboratory Technologist also provides technical support and guidance to faculty and students in the CHC or other locations, during associated activities. The Laboratory Technologist may be responsible for reporting and performing immediate on-site care of injuries within the lab spaces. The Laboratory Technologist adheres to the professional standards of the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association (CATA) and the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (CKO).

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-year diploma or degree, plus a professional certification (or equivalent) in Athletic Therapy, Sports Injury, Kinesiology or related field (4-year degree in both Athletic Therapy and Kinesiology preferred);
  • Minimum 5 years experience as an Athletic Therapist, preferably in a clinical setting; including experience supervising other therapists and/or students, providing feedback, presenting to small groups, leading meetings and giving direction;
  • Registration with CATA and CAT(C) designation is required;
  • Hold a valid First Aid and CPR-HCP certificate, or CATA approved equivalent as per CATA certification requirements;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and scheduling software (e.g. JaneApp) is preferred;
  • Registration with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (CKO) is an asset.

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Supporting and providing oversight to experiential learning activities in CHC;
  • Preparing labs/clinic with equipment and supplies as per curriculum requirements and faculty needs;
  • Providing guidance to students regarding the application/implementation of professional practice principles;
  • Advising instructors and students regarding the proper operation of new equipment;
  • Developing program activities, demonstrations, manuals and lab procedures;
  • Maintaining manuals, standard operating procedures, and product information to be used by the Applied Health faculty and students;
  • Coordinating completion of daily tasks between the Advanced Clinical Practice students, work-study students, and student interns at the CHC;
  • Coordinating, organizing and maintaining an inventory of all equipment and supplies in the CHC;
  • Analyzing, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining lab equipment or arranges for appropriate service within the CHC;
  • Communicating with equipment suppliers/vendors and assesses cost analysis, availability, technical specifications, testing and installation criteria to support the needs of the Applied Health programs;
  • Placing purchase orders for new laboratory equipment, parts, chemicals and supplies with approval from Operations Manager, Clinics and Labs;
  • Ensuring that the CHC operates in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), the policies and procedures of CATA and CKO;
  • Communicating, planning and coordinating occasional project based activities with other Sheridan departments (e.g. Facilities Management, Health and Safety, Health & Counselling Services, Athletics, Conference Services);
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
