Description:
QUALIFICATIONS
- MSc. or equivalent, in analytical chemistry or forensic chemistry;
- Two (2) to three (3) years of experience, which may include graduate level research and training;
- Demonstrated experience with chromatography/mass spectrometry instrumentation;
- Experience with elemental mass spectrometry and/or DNA sequencing is an asset;
- Experience with a spectrum of instrumental chemical analysis techniques is required; and
- Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.
The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.

Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES
This individual in this position will provide analytical support to researchers in the Perdue Central Analytical Facility (PCAF), with direct involvement in instrumental analysis in a variety of research projects. The individual will undertake training in operation and maintenance of a suite of analytical instruments, including several forms of mass spectrometers, optical spectroscopy, and a new gene sequencer, as part of the various research projects conducted in PCAF. In addition to contributing to experimental design and instrumental analysis, the selected candidate will also participate directly in analysis of the data collected, as well as the training of new research students.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Plans and executes laboratory projects and experiments within objectives set by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture in conjunction with faculty, staff students and other researchers;
- Performs literature searches, reviews, and recommends new or improved methodologies to meet the research and teaching priorities of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture;
- Assists faculty, staff, students and other users to establish, modify and develop analytical methods that are needed for their research and teaching work when the infrastructure is provided;
- Assists in developing, monitoring, maintaining, and reporting quality control programs for various analytical procedures;
- Works on the development of novel approaches to solving specific problems using the instrumentation available to facilitate research and teaching within the University;
- Helps users to perform routine and non-routine analytical work following established procedures on a wide variety of samples using classical and modern instrumental methods of analysis. Provides advice on approved and validated protocols of techniques, analytical methods and standard operating procedures as appropriate in the work of the sector in order to ensure the defensibility, uniformity, quantity, integrity and reliability of test results;
- Assists students, researcher, and faculty with their analytical needs, which may include method development, method validation and method implementation;
- Ensures that faculty, post-doctoral fellows, students, and research assistants are properly trained in health and safety procedures and the appropriate use of equipment in the facility. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials;
- Assesses and reports on the quality of experimental and analytical data, incorporating quality control data. Maintains records and files;
- Acts as a resource person, resolves problems and instructs others, oversees the day-to-day operations of the facility;
- Maintains equipment and arranges for regular servicing/repairs to ensure the equipment is operational the majority of the time;
- Maintains inventory and inventory logs. Identifies and communicates all operational supply requirements, instrumentation upgrade needs and failures to the appropriate for redress;
- Performs some accounting functions, such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials and equipment;
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge;
- Participates in the preparation of material for publication or presentation such as graphs, tables, lists of references, and descriptions of procedures as needed;
- Participates training sessions for analytical instrumentation and methods;
- Assists with installation of new equipment and decommissioning of non-current equipment; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
