Salary Range: SP2 Level 4, $74,242 - $92,803 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Land Use Officer – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator is seeking a passionate and driven Land Use Officer to join our Regulatory Applications branch. In this exciting role, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping Alberta’s land use by leading the technical review of surface applications on public land. From participating in pre-application discussions and tackling high-risk elements, to providing expert recommendations, issuing approvals, and auditing previous decisions, you’ll play a vital role in protecting Alberta’s natural resources.

What your day-to-day will look like:
- Review and process non-routine applications for energy activities on public lands. Ensure timelines are met and that directives and policies are followed. Maintain desired outcomes through placement of appropriate standards and conditions on approvals. Initiate field inspections to compliment application and audit reviews when needed. Identify and conduct compliance actions for more complex files.
- Liaise with representatives from industry during the pre-application and application review process including but not limited to regulatory requirements associated with oil and gas development and respond to internal and external inquires.
- Participate in workshops, meetings, conferences, communities of practice or other enterprise initiatives to support continuous improvement. Prepare advice and support to Advisors and Managers and collaborate with AER colleagues.
- Conduct application integrity audits as per established processes and targets to ensure appropriate risk-based compliance and assurance mechanisms are in place throughout the life cycle of oil and gas projects.
- Support enterprise projects by assisting with the technical information required, implementing the results into our core business functions and collaborating with stakeholders (internal and external) as necessary.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Diploma in Forestry or Natural Resource Management or a related field along with 2+ years of related experience in natural resource management
- Strong knowledge of Alberta’s Public Lands Regulation and Policy with the ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external
- Make risk-Informed decisions with strong attention to detail and the ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally
- Membership eligibility with the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists or the College of Alberta Professional Foresters is considered an asset
- Pre-placement Medical required
- Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record
- Additional training required or will be provided: First Aid, H2S Alive and WHIMS
- Required travel 2-3 trips per year
- 95 % office work and 5% field work
