Description:
Under the general direction of the Project Coordinator, the Landscape Architect / Urban Designer provides professional landscape architectural design, site planning, consultation, and project management service for the design, construction, improvement, utilization and/or conservation of land for parks, recreation and urban open space purpose in accordance with the professional standard of Landscape Architecture; civic policy and procedures for design, construction and project administration.
As the Landscape Architect / Urban Designer, you will:
- Develop and manage public open space landscape architectural projects, including leading internal project teams. Provides professional landscape architectural design services for the construction, improvement, utilization, and conservation of land for parks, recreation and urban open space purpose including financial accountability.
- Provide landscape architectural, project management services, and technical advice to other levels of government, school divisions, resident advisory groups regarding issues relating to open space design and public safety.
- Review and recommend for approval; landscape design, working drawings and construction budgets prepared by private design consultants for a wide range of civic and private Developer projects.
- Provide professional landscape architectural design services for the long-range planning of underdeveloped public reserve for future parks, recreation and urban open space purpose.
- Represent the Department in the provision of landscape architectural and related policies/procedures expertise to task forces and study groups established for the purpose of investigating issues involving planning, design standards and development policies.
YOUR EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture or equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
- Attainment of the Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects full member status or ability to obtain this designation within a two (2) year timeframe from the date of hire.
- Post-secondary education in Project Management is an asset.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience, including practicing the principles of landscape architectural design including pre-design, conceptual design, design development, detailed design (including creating construction drawings), specifications, construction documents, tendering and contract administration.
- Experience in the preparation of technical and design solutions required to implement and construct open space projects, including CAD systems.
- Financial management experience, including cost estimating, budget systems preparation and financial tracking.
- Extensive knowledge of the parks and recreation standards for development and maintenance for such amenities as sports, recreation, and playgrounds is an asset.
- Extensive knowledge in the principles and practices of Project Management, including initiation, planning, execution and control.
- Knowledge of civic/department procedures and policies, the political approval process, legal/statutory requirements and inter-department communications is an asset.
- Strong written communication skills, including reports to senior management, elected officials, clients and interest groups.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including presentations to senior management, elected officials, clients and interest groups.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize and delegate work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, professionals, politicians, and the general public.
- Ability to manage and track multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to coordinate and project manage the activities of committees and task forces.
- Ability to travel to meetings or site visits throughout the city of Winnipeg.
