Job Overview

The Landscape Laborer reports directly to the Landscape and Grounds Supervisor along with eight other laborers Gardener II and Gardener positions. The Landscape Laborer reports indirectly to the Gardener II or Gardener positions. The position is part of a landscape maintenance team that receives training and experience vital to the maintenance of exterior space on the campus, generally referred to as landscape maintenance. This employee supports a direct service of the department in ensuring an attractive, comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. Performs landscape labor work by assisting to prepare and maintain landscaped areas as part of the services provided by the Facilities Management department to maintain university buildings and grounds. Duties include but not limited to:

  • Irrigating lawns and planted areas, mulching, reactivating flower beds and tree saucers, laying sod assisting in the application of pesticides and other related work.
  • Works with crews responding to requests for service by performing cleanup, snow removal and similar activities.
  • Ensures efficient and economic use of supplies and materials to conserve university resources.
  • Draws and/or requisitions supplies, parts, materials and tools needed and uses such items economically to avoid undue costs.
  • Informs supervisor of supply/material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
  • Provides supervisors with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Two years of experience performing general or landscape labor work
  • Driver’s permit from Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia is required
  • Highschool Diploma
