The Data Program is part of the Data and Digital Group (DDG) and is responsible for:

  • enterprise data governance and advice,
  • planning for data and observations,
  • enhancing data integrity and quality, and
  • data services to meet customer requirements.

The Lead Data Specialist role sits in the Data Enablement Services section. The role provides strategic data-focused expertise to ensure existing weather, climate and ocean data and metadata is managed and future business requirements are understood. The role will manage appropriate business rules, data validation and conversion rules (review, document and implement) to uplift data integrity. This role will ensure that business requirements can be fulfilled within future enhancements, to support organisational outcomes. It applies standard Data Governance and Management processes to planning and implementation activities as a senior stakeholder within data platform remediation projects. The role will provide strategic advice and leadership for data-related activities and projects across business areas, in particular to support future plans for improvements to observations data and metadata for weather, climate and ocean data.
The Lead Data Specialist will be a champion for uplifting knowledge of good data and metadata practices, to actively encourage a culture of data driven decision making and embed data management practices. While performing a pivotal role in the Data Enablement Services team, this role will work across a multidisciplinary environment as a strategic advisor to other Programs in the Data and Digital Group and other technical areas, in delivering innovative data solutions in a complex environmental and operational data landscape. The role will be expected to work across the agency to ensure an enterprise view on data, to provide authoritative advice, troubleshoot issues of inconsistency and develop plans to resolve issues holistically, with a focus on customer trust in Bureau data and the impact and value it drives. The role will contribute to continual improvement of data governance artefacts to guide data and metadata management activities.
The position will require well developed communications skills, a rigorous approach to risk management, analysis of data issues, problem solving and quality management skills.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Extensive experience in program and project planning for major data transformations, with a solid foundation in data governance and management to support integrity of data on platforms, during periods of change.
  • Strategic leadership and expertise in managing environmental and meteorological observations data, adhering to World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and other relevant data standards.
  • A proven ability to undertake complex analysis and technical problem-solving for enterprise data challenges and data management issues, address project risks to uplift data quality and integrity, enterprise-wide.
  • Setting direction and providing oversight for metadata, master and reference data solutions, data flows, data standards, data integration processes, with an emphasis on environmental and operational data platforms.
  • Strong communication skills, including influencing decision-making on complex or ambiguous matters, active listening, facilitation, and stakeholder management, with the capacity to display personal and professional resilience under pressure.
  • Enthusiasm and drive both individually and within a team, contributing through your comprehensive knowledge of data management systems, environmental data, and a commitment to delivering high-quality data services.
