Specialized experience includes leading/overseeing individuals, teams or groups; experience working in health services research, epidemiology, health economics, or research methods; utilizing computer language such as SAS or SQL to analyze and manage data; demonstrating technical writing skills (data documentation, presentations); and analyzing healthcare data. DUTIES

The VA/CMS Data for Research Project serves as the data custodian for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and United States Renal Data System (USRDS) data for VA research use. The Project also provides education and assistance to VA researchers using the data to study Veterans’ use of Medicare and Medicaid services.
VIReC’s mission is to support the effective use of data by VA’s analytic community to transform Veteran health and health care as part of a learning health system. We do this by developing and disseminating knowledge about databases of interest to VA researchers, assisting researchers who require information about data resources specific to their research, and representing the interests of researchers regarding VA database and information systems. In addition, VIReC serves the VA research community by providing education and assistance to VA researchers using this data. The Lead Social Science Analyst will support and educate VA researchers using administrative, claims, and other data provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Experience with CMS data is required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the creation of reports to assist researchers in designing studies on Veteran’s use of healthcare services through CMS.
  • Educating VA’s data user community on the use of CMS data.
  • Advising investigators in research methodology involving CMS data.
  • Providing technical support and consultation to projects using VA and CMS data for research projects.
  • Using SAS or SQL to investigate data quality issues in VA and CMS data.
  • Documenting the quality and utility of large databases.

Duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Ensures the organization’s strategic plan, mission, vision and values are communicated to the team and integrated into the team’s strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products and services.
  • Communicates to the team the assignment, project, problem to be solved, actionable events, milestones, and/or program issues under review, and deadlines and time frames for completion.
  • Identifies, distributes, and balances workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or occupational specialization.
  • Performs collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data.
  • Accrues appropriate research data, maintains data files, establishes databases, and assures appropriate data complication, tabulation, summarization, and analysis.
  • Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work, checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to see that the supervisor’s instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met.
  • Advises investigators in research methodology for projects using VA and CMS data.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of work accomplishments and administrative information, as required, and coordinates the preparation, presentation and communication of work-related information and progress to the supervisor.
  • Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others, such as formal grievances and appeals, to the supervisor or an appropriate management official.
  • Maintains a library of reference materials, work files, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Manages and analyzes data using statistical software and language such as SAS/SPSS/Stata/R/SQL.
  • Answers questions from researchers and other data users via the help desk.
  • Develops data user guides and other documentation on large complex healthcare data for the national research community.
  • Provide training to staff on specific data knowledge areas that advance research use of VA databases.
  • Develops educational materials to support VA researchers’ use of CMS data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
