Description:

The Learning Center Tutor is a part-time staff position at Blinn College and the tutor supports classes they have previously taken previously as a student. Students that have never taken classes at Blinn can apply to become a Learning Center Tutor, but they would have to taken a class that is the equivalent to the class they will be supporting at the Learning Center. The candidate will need an instructor referral from Blinn or the college they are currently or previously attended. The position will primarily be staffed in BLDG C, Room 217, but there may be times when you will be asked to tutor in other locations on campus at Blinn College or occasionally over Zoom. Learning Center Tutors will primarily support the subjects they are hired to tutor but may be required to complete administrative clerical tasks when requested to do so.
Required Quals Summary
Must have received an “A” or “B” in class qualified to tutor. A minimum GPA of 2.5 in related courses.

This is a part time on-campus position, can work up to 19 hours per week during learning center business hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently taking courses at Blinn College, Texas A&M, two-year or four-year institution or student that has graduated with a bachelor’s or advanced degree. (If obtained degree, please attach unofficial transcripts in optional document)
  • Grade of A or B in the course being tutored OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the course being tutored. For example: if taught a class qualified to tutor for, that education experience can substitute the letter grade requirement. Please attach unofficial transcripts to this application.
  • Reference from one professor in your major area of study who can attest to your knowledge, skills and suitability to tutor. If no longer a student but have obtained a degree, a professional letter of recommendation from a previous employer or professional may be substituted. Must attach unofficial transcripts to demonstrate knowledge, skills and mastery of subjects).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Course work in the same subject areas and above the level of courses being tutored.
  • Previous experience tutoring or in related work.
  • Taken same Blinn class or equivalent class that is offered for tutoring to student. The class does not have to be taught by the same professor.
  • Proficient in computer usage and word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.

Establish and maintain program requirements by:

  • Attend all mandatory trainings required for all student staff.
  • Timely and complete submission of required paperwork for payroll and record-keeping (Web-time entry, verification forms).
  • Maintain confidentiality with students and uphold FERPA guidelines while working.
  • Timely and complete submission of support documentation
  • Professional conduct in a manner that is a representative of the Learning Center and Blinn College.
  • Performing related tasks and other duties as assigned by Learning Center Director or Learning Center staff.
  • Checking emails daily and managing an Outlook calendar throughout the semester

Responsibilities:

Provide academic support to Blinn students by:

  • Provides educational assistance to students in subjects eligible to tutor, including the methods of studying and improving understanding and comprehension of subject matter content.
  • May collaborate with faculty to provide embedded tutoring support in specific, designated courses.
  • Works well in a team environment and may be required to take on a peer leadership or mentoring position in the tutoring center when requested to do so.
  • Hold scheduled appointments on -campus, in-person at the tutoring space or online over Zoom /

Microsoft Teams, as needed.

  • Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing relevant material. All review for sessions will

be done tutoring hours and in the Learning Center.

  • Meets and communicates with students in-person and via e-mail, canvas and other online

platforms.

  • Contributes to the preparation of collaborative group tutoring sessions and materials that will enhance student understanding of coursework.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, confidentiality, and communication skills in accordance

with policies and procedures of the Learning Center.

  • Assist the Learning Center Director and Learning Center Assistants with administrative

tasks as needed.

  • When required, tutor students in subjects you are qualified to tutor but is not on your

list of courses you primarily support.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned by the Learning Center Director or staff.
