OBJECTIVE OF THIS POST:

The principal objective of the post is to provide teaching, co-ordination and examining of RCSI’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes offered by the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences – MPharm, BSc(Advanced Therapeutic Technologies) & MSc(Technologies and Analytics in Precision Medicine). In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to other educational programmes offered by the Faculty, as appropriate. In Research, the successful applicant will contribute to RCSI research metrics, where possible, by supporting research and knowledge transfer activities aligned to designated areas of priority for the School and the wider University.
RCSI is seeking a professional who is passionate about teaching, who would like to contribute to working as an academic in a multicultural environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate energy, initiative and excellent organisation and communication skills.
The post- holder will be based in the School of Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences

PERSON SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in Human Genetics/Genomics/Computational Biology.
  • Strong teaching interest and skill set, as evidenced by experience of, a proven track record in, and enthusiasm for undergraduate/postgraduate teaching and assessment in Human Genetics/Genomics
    o Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies including relevant bioinformatic analysis.
    o Expertise in disease genetics, especially in the clinical setting (i.e. ACMG guidelines and variant interpretation).
    o Expertise in the overall areas of genetics and genomics with particular emphasis on precision medicine.

o Ability to conduct practical lab sessions (dry and wet) in basic molecular biology and NGS analysis.

  • Enthusiasm for your specialist teaching area and the ability to engage your students to successfully transfer this passion and learning.
  • Capacity for original thought and the ability to produce original and up to date teaching methods.
  • An ability to continuously adapt and innovate teaching methods to ensure students’ full understanding
  • Demonstrate an interest in seeking ways and opportunities to support students’ whole development.
  • Effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation.
  • Proven Research record, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in journals of high quality/impact and grant support, appropriate to career stage.

Responsibilities:

  • Participating in the administration, coordination, development, delivery and assessment of current teaching programmes in the discipline of Human Genetics/Genomics and related areas for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Supervising undergraduate students and postgraduate students at Masters level.
  • Contributing to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules.
  • Engage in research and knowledge transfer activities aligned to designated areas of priority for the School and the University. These areas of priority are within the broad themes of: Cancer; Neurological & Psychiatric Disorders; Infection, Immunity and Inflammation; Vascular Biology; Population Health and Health Sciences; Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biomaterials.
  • Contribute to and supporting ongoing academic, clinical and industry-based research collaborations within the School, nationally and internationally.
  • Contribute to School thesis review committees, as required.
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required.
  • Undertaking overseas assignments as may be required from time to time.
  • Performing such other related duties as may be required.
  • Representing the best interests of the School of Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences and RCSI, at all times.
