The historic School of Jewellery in Birmingham, part of the BCU College of Jewellery, Fashion & Textiles, is one of the leading establishments in the world for the study of jewellery and associated disciplines. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a full time Lecturer for 2 years fixed term, with the right combination of studio practice experience, contextual knowledge, and academic skills to join our prestigious BA Hons Jewellery and Objects Degree course. This Degree is an internationally recognised Course where students are encouraged to push the boundaries of the discipline and gain recognition through awards and prizes from across the sector. With a high graduate success rate in a range of allied and associated fields it attracts students from all around the globe.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE:

You will be responsible for both delivering and developing a range of modules related to the field of Jewellery and Objects. You will be expected to take responsibility for academic and practical tutoring as well as a range of pastoral support to the student body. Within the University there will be opportunities to take on important roles in supporting and developing the University as a whole, the wider School of Jewellery and the BA Hons Jewellery & Objects Degree course. In addition, there will be opportunities to develop research and enterprise interests within the wider University. Previous teaching experience is favoured where possible.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be responsible for the delivery of a range of modules within your specialist area of expertise, these will range from Theoretical studies, Studio practice, Design Development and Employability skills.
  • Work with the Course team to develop the course content and learning materials.
  • Engage in Academic administration.
  • Provide Pastoral support of students.
  • Participate in Recruitment and outreach activities.
  • Implement University policies around Health and Safety, Wellbeing, Environment, Safeguarding.
  • Ensure you are upholding BCU Values.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area (essential)
  • Experience of Studio practice (essential)
  • Experience of Learning and Teaching at Higher Education level (desirable)
  • Hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification or be accredited via the UK Professional Standards
  • Framework for Higher Education or Undertake APA teaching qualification as required (desirable)
  • Strong problem solving and communications skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Understanding of the requirements of the industry, locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Strong communication, presentation skills.
  • Pastoral support and guidance of staff and students.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Application of EDI good practice to widen participation and engage all students.
  • Practice and application of sustainable principals.
  • Strong organisational skills in planning.
  • Have a research interest or be currently research active.
