Description:
Lancaster Medical School (LMS) is a flourishing, innovative and vibrant Division of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, whose guiding principle is to deliver excellence in medical training and health related research. We seek to appoint a Lecturer in Medical Humanities to contribute to the development and delivery of our programmes, including our undergraduate MBChB programme. In particular, we are looking for a lecturer who could contribute to teaching in subject areas outside of Sociology, Psychology and Ethics/Bioethics to complement existing staff expertise. You will join a supportive team made up of clinicians and academics to deliver and take responsibility for the development and organisation of various components within the curriculum. This will include contributing to lectures, workshops and tutorials and involvement in all aspects of assessment.
We are looking for a lecturer whose research interests broadly align with research themes of LMS, who will join a research group aligned to their expertise. You will be supported to develop your own programme of research and will be encouraged to develop collaborative research within the Faculty of Health and Medicine and the Faculty of Social Sciences in line with our research strategy. Find out more about our research groups where you will have the support and academic freedom you need for a successful career. You will also be encouraged to supervise dissertation projects and PhD students.
As the Director of Widening Participation, you will continue to develop and implement the department’s widening participation strategy to improve access to studying medicine to underrepresented groups. You will be the academic lead on the department’s outreach activities, working closely with colleagues across the university and in local NHS Trusts to deliver on and off campus events to school students. In addition, you will work closely with the Director of Admissions and the Medical School Admissions Team to assist with all aspects of recruitment and selection to the undergraduate and gateway year programmes.
We are looking for a dynamic individual to join us and become a part of the intellectual and collective life of the School. In return, we can offer you a friendly research and teaching environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education. LMS is committed to ensuring our workforce is reflective of our diverse student population and is therefore committed to increasing representation of minoritised staff across all roles and at all levels. We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups and are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements for this post, including working week, flexible start/finish times or condensed hours.
Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Marina Anderson (Head of Lancaster Medical School) m.e.anderson@lancaster.ac.uk or Dr Nicola Phillips (Director of Admissions for Medicine) n.phillips1@lancaster.ac.
