JOB PURPOSE

The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences seeks a dynamic researcher and instructor who conducts research and scholarship in Global Terrestrial Water. This position is one of three positions associated with a cluster hire in Building a Habitable Planet.
We seek candidates with expertise focusing on catchment to regional and global scale surface water hydrology; the influence of weather and climate change on surface waters, Earth’s surface, or communities; or real-time (big-data) analysis of meteorologic and hydrologic data streams. Approaches integrating field and GIS, remote-sensing or geodetic data with process-based models are encouraged to apply. Additionally, we seek candidates who complement existing school strengths in fluvial geomorphology, water chemistry, and freshwater ecology. The candidate is expected to develop (Grade 7), or bring with them (Grade 8/9), a vigorous and externally funded research program and to play a leading role in GIS, remote sensing, or geodesy-based research at the university.
The candidate will support undergraduate teaching in the geographical and environmental sciences and postgraduate (MSc) programs in Geomatics, Climate and Environmental Science, Sustainable Water Environments, and Earth Futures. Teaching contributions will be in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in GIS, remote sensing and/or geodesy, field excursions, and surface and groundwater hydrology. We are particularly interested in candidates with a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to scholarship. The post holder will benefit from existing high-performance computing resources in the school, as well as existing expertise in field observations, scientific computing and data science/AI methods. We seek individuals who will deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment and contribute to school management and administration.
At Grades 8 or 9, demonstrated leadership, prior external funding, and contributions to academic and strategic management are required.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop, lead and sustain personal and group research aligned appropriately to School/College research strategy.
2. Enhance your research profile, reputation and esteem through:
(i) Establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high-quality refereed journals, generating research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit;
(ii) Presentation at international and national conferences and at internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops;
(iii) Identification of potential funding sources and the development of a vigorously funded research program that secures funding from external bodies to support future research;
(iv) Developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the School/College/University and external Academic and Industrial Partners;
(v) Contribution to team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.
3. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of high-quality teaching in GIS and other subjects, supervision and assessment activities across under/postgraduate programmes within the Subject/School.
4. Contribute to the ongoing development and design of under/postgraduate curricula, to ensure a research led approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
5. Manage a variety of academic administrative activities, including timely delivery of effective and constructive feedback on assessment, and provision of pastoral support.
6. Contribute to the management and organisational duties of the School, as assigned by the Head of School (Prof. Todd Ehlers).
7. Engage in personal, professional and career development.
8. Contribute to enhancing the University’s international profile per the University’s Strategic Plan: World Changers Together.
