POSITION SUMMARY

SCI Sessional Lecturers/tutors play a vital role in contributing to the achievement of our strategic objectives, particularly our firm commitment to an exceptional student experience delivered through our high-quality teaching and learning practices. The lecturers/tutors’ contribution to SCI success can be through lecturing, tutoring, marking, student consultations, and other appropriate administrative tasks.
The primary purpose and responsibilities of the Sessional Lecturers/Tutors are to teach a group or groups of full or part-time students on specific courses. The appointed lecturers and/or tutors will be expected to undertake any other duties reasonably falling within the scope of this role

Responsibilities:

  • Enhance student’s skills, knowledge and understanding through the efficient and timely preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials and/or workshops.
  • Complete the administrative work connected with teaching efficiently and effectively, including the preparation of classwork, marking of coursework, assessment of students, setting and marking relevant examination papers, progress reports, regular completion of registers, other termly or annual statistics as required.
  • Engage students in intellectual inquiry appropriate to the level of the program of study and course being taught.
  • Provide students with timely access to the information and support needed to complete their work for the course.
  • Develop and implement student assessment strategies in accordance with SCI policies and the requirements of awarding bodies.
  • Adopt a consistent approach in dealing with student discipline in accordance with SCI policies and procedures.
  • Adopt procedures and practices to create a safe working environment and ensure all students comply with the Institute’s policies and any safety standards in force for the area of work.
  • As part of ongoing professional development and currency, engage in scholarly activities in relevant academic discipline/area.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their specialist fields and in the fields of education and training.
  • Participate fully in professional development, undertaking training or retraining, the acquisition of essential qualifications and attendance in Staff Induction Sessions.
  • Propose any ideas that may help to promote and extend the reputation and efficient running of SCI.
  • Work flexibly, which may include evening and weekend work.
  • Ensure a supportive and positive learning environment for all students.
  • Be familiar with and follow relevant policies and procedures.
  • Observe principles and practices of equity and diversity in the workplace.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for self and others.
  • Perform other duties as may be required by the Dean, Academic Directors or their nominees in order to ensure the efficient functioning of SCI.
